Scene 1: INTRODUCTION

Ali - Welcome to our short performance "Student Distractions" (Do we have a different title? ~ I think it is a great name)
First I would like to introduce the characters...
Alex, the teacher
Svetlana, the student
David, rational thought - wears halo, white lab coat, thick glasses and a serious face...
Ian, free spirit
Michelle, the sport queen
Richard, bodily needs

Ali - In January 2010, any number of us, the February 2009 intake, will be starting our new teaching jobs. Here are some of the issues that we will face as we complete our transformation from students to teachers, responsible for the education of young distracted minds. We need to use the PoLT, the VELS and app the department initiatives, but in reality we need to engage young minds with all the thoughts and dilemmas passing through.

Scene 2: MR ROGERS' KITCHEN

Radio plays as Alex packs his bag. This bit will be fairly ad-libbed....
Wife (Ali): Aren't you ready yet love?
?Alex:
Wife:
You just need to remember what you were taught at Uni, come on what would Greg say?
?Alex:
Wife: OK, what about Ray Lewis, you loved his lectures?
Alex: Focus on the behaviour not the child,
Wife: Dora? What did she teach you?
Alex: Ah that's it, Charlie (?) the tambourine
Wife: And Chris Brew, what about her
Alex: Ahh, Chris, sunglasses and coffee - and maths [pause] Yes, I think I'm ready, I'll see you later, love you.
Wife: Love you too, see you tonight.

Scene 3: SVETLANA's BEDROOM THIS SCENE NEEDS YOU TO ADD YOUR PARTS PROPERLY

Mum (Ali): Svetlana - Are you awake yet?

After the Boomtown rats song 'Tell Me Why I Don't Like Mondays' has finished; Svetlana wakes up slowly

David: Come on Svetlana - Get up! You've been sleeping for the past 8 hours, you don't need another 5 minutes!
There is so much to do today and you don't have much time to get ready. Wake up!...Get out of bed!

Ian: (massaging her shoulders and pushing her back down to sleep) No, don't worry about getting up, just a few more minutes sleep

Richard: Come on get up I'm busting (dancing a jig)

Michelle: Come on now, up you get we're going for a jog!

Cue music (which tune???.......................) for element group aerobics session.
All internal characters do their own moves.
Svetlana moves across each of the distractions and as she reaches the end

David's 'rational thought' moves include: pointing to wrist watch, forward direction, and tapping all pockets checking that all is in place and organised
Ian's 'free spirit' moves include:
Richard's 'bodily needs' moves include:
Michelle's 'sporty' moves include: Stretching, jogging on the spot.

Mum (Ali): Did you pack your lunch box? the bus is here!
Svet: Yes, Mum!
Dad (?who?): Have a good day dear!
Svet: Yes, Dad!

Scene 4: THE SCHOOL BUS

Alex (bus driver) pulls his bus up to collect Svetlana with all the elements following.

The cardboard 'bus' prop drives off to the merry accompaniment of the 'Wheels on the Bus' song. (?Who is able to create the bus prop?)
Three verses of the song have been added here.
It would be a good idea for all the song's words to be presented on a PowerPoint slide so that all our audience members can engage further with our performance.

During the time it takes for everyone to sing the song Alison will have plenty of time to change the prop scenes from bedroom to classroom.

Depending on the upcoming teacher / student classroom dialogue it may also be good timing to switch the pre-prepared popcorn machine on (on-to-pop takes about 3 minutes)

The wheels on the bus go round and round
Round and round, round and round
The wheels on the bus go round and round
All through the town.
(Roll hands over each other)

The baby on the bus says, "Wah, wah, wah!
Wah, wah, wah, wah, wah, wah!"
The baby on the bus says, "Wah, wah, wah!"
All through the town.
(Fisted hands in front of eyesand rub them like baby crying)

The people on the bus say, "Shh, shh, shh,
Shh, shh, shh, shh, shh, shh"
The people on the bus say, "Shh, shh, shh"
All through the town.
(Put pointer finger to mouth to 'shhh')

At the end of this 'shhh' verse. It is expected that all audience members would be silent and ready for the opening of the next scene.

Scene 5: THE CLASSROOM

Svetlana sitting at classroom desk as all the elements are positioned around the classroom.

Alex: Good morning class
Svetlana & everyone (mumble): Good morning Mr Rogers (you beautiful creature)
Alex: I didn’t hear you…
Svetlana and everyone (LOUDLY): Good morning Mr Rogers (you beautiful teacher!)
?Alex: So this morning in today’s class were going to be doing poetry
?Svetlana: What’s a poem sir?
?Alex: Then we’re going to be doing maths, then for science and some fun we’re going to be making popcorn

(??) Review classroom curriculum dialogue so that popcorn machine / science class aspect timing works well.

Alex & distraction:
While writing poem on board all distractions appear one by one

Popcorn Poetry
Popcorn crowding all around,
Hot air blows them round and round,
Yellow corn kernels poppity pop,
One after another, when will they stop?

Whirling, swirling the popcorn pops,
In a bowl they quickly drop,
Fluffy popcorn, grab a bunch,
Light and tasty, eat them crunch. (james hörner)

Svetlana: sitting at desk fiddling an looking board
David: C'mon Svetlana get your pen out and write this stuff down. This is important info. You know what Mr Rogers is like, he is sure to test us on poetry in next week.
Rational thought hands Svetlana a pen and moves around the class / audience distributing pens and notepaper watching that members are writing the poem that the teacher is writing on the board.

Svet: Can't read your writing sir!

Ian: Hey yo! Hi five! Don't pay attention to that...check out the cool Guy sebastian song...great tune! (song plays).
Free spirit, movin' and grovin', hands over his iPod to Svet

Michelle: I'm sick of sitting still. Rip some paper out of your book and get up!! lets see if you can shoot a goal! Did you see the game on Saturday? Wasn't '..................................' HOT! "sigh" and walk off.
Sporty girl moves around the room with her sports equipment, throwing an imaginery ball in the air to hit with tennins racquet, constantly stopping to stretch and flex.

Rich: Gee, I'm hungry! Smell the popcorn...When do you think it will be ready?
Bodily needs licks his lips, drinks, rubs his stomach, itches, clears his thoat and paces over to the popcorn machine and shares it out to the audience.

Alex: Rattles tambourine so all the audience pays attention.
Alex: I can tell we are all distracted – C’mon we’re all in this together...lets go… DANCE.

Song tune plays on speakers.
Free Spirit take the front position and other performers follow with the dance.

We're all in this Together
Once we know that we are all stars
and we see that we are all in this together
and it shows when we stand hand in hand
make our dreams come true.

Party Poppers!!!!
